Recommended Image Sizes for Social Media

Social Media Marketing: Why is it Important?

As of 2020, there are 7.7 billion people in the world. Of that number, 4.6 billion people use social media. Studies have shown that a person spends an average of 2 hours and 27 minutes a day on social media (weforum.org). With that knowledge, why wouldn’t you want your products or services to show up on someone’s feed?

Social media is proving to be one of the most effective and efficient ways to market one’s business. Not only does it reach more people in a shorter amount of time, it can target specific audiences to ensure the people you want to see your ads do.

But what happens when someone sees an ad that is sloppy, pixelated, and overall low-quality? They will probably scroll right past it. That is why having the correct image size for each platform is absolutely crucial.

Image Sizing and Resolution

Why do you need different images for different platforms?

It would make a lot more sense for one image to work across all of the major platforms: i.e. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. However, that is just not the way it works. Because each platform has different formatting, and is sometimes different across devices, each social media platform recommends certain image sizes to optimize their quality.

How are images sized?

There are a few ways the sizes of images can be measured, but the most common two are the aspect ratio and pixels.

Pixels

Pixels the smallest units of graphic images. The higher number of pixels per inch (PPI) in an image, the better the quality of the image, or higher resolution. When a social media platform refers to the recommended pixelation of a photo, it is referring to the quality of the photo.

Aspect Ratio

The aspect ratio of an image refers to the ratio of the width to the height. For example, a 4 inch x 6 inch (the most common size) photograph has an aspect ratio of 2:3. When a social media platform refers to the size of an image, they are more likely to reference the aspect ratio. The most common aspect ratio is 16:9, because it has the capability of the highest resolution.

Recommended Image Size Based on Platform
